General Overview of Hamster Species

We have compiled important information about five of the most popular hamster species among more than twenty species, each with their own adorable appearance.

Syrian Hamster

Also known as golden hamsters, Syrian hamsters are among the most popular hamster species as pets. Their slower movements and lower likelihood of biting make them ideal hamsters, especially for children. In addition, their size, which can vary between 12-22 cm and makes them larger than other popular hamsters, allows them to be easily controlled. Syrian hamsters, which can weigh up to 140 g, generally have a lifespan of 2-3 years. Because they prefer to live alone, they will not want to live in the same cage with another hamster of their own kind. Although they originally had golden-colored fur, nowadays you can find multicolored Syrian hamsters in various colors. Roborovski Hamster Roborovski hamsters, which are among the smallest hamster species and are classified as dwarf hamsters, can grow up to 5 cm in length and weigh between 20-25 g. In addition to their small size, they are extremely fast and do not like to be handled, which may cause some people to have difficulty or be unable to hold them. Roborovski hamsters have white fur on their belly and sandy brown fur on their back. They can live for an average of 3 years. They can be kept in the same cage with several hamsters of the same sex. Since they prefer an active life, a hamster cage full of toys is ideal for them.

Roborovski Hamster

Roborovski hamsters, classified as dwarf hamsters and among the smallest hamster species, can grow up to 5 cm in length and weigh between 20-25 g. Their small size, combined with their extremely fast speed and reluctance to be handled, can make them difficult or impossible for some people to hold. Roborovski hamsters have white fur on their bellies and sandy brown fur on their backs. They can live for an average of 3 years. They can be kept in the same cage with several hamsters of the same sex. Since they prefer an active life, a hamster cage filled with plenty of toys is ideal for them.

Siberian Hamster

The Siberian hamster, also known as the Winter White hamster, is a type of dwarf hamster. Siberian hamsters are 10-15 cm long and weigh between 70-90 g. Their lifespan can range from 3-3.5 years. The dark stripe running from their head to their tail is their most distinctive feature. Because they don't have a very calm temperament, you should be careful when handling a Siberian hamster. For the same reason, Siberian hamsters may not be a good choice for young children. If introduced at an early age, multiple Siberian hamsters can live in the same cage, but to prevent a sudden increase in the population, you may prefer hamsters of the same sex.

Campbell Hamster

Named after C.W. Campbell, the explorer who first identified the species, Campbell hamsters are classified as dwarf hamsters, ranging in size from 5 to 10 cm. Weighing between 40 and 60 g, Campbell hamsters have a similar appearance to Winter White hamsters, although they have darker and shorter stripes. Campbell hamsters also differ from Winter White hamsters in having less fur on their feet and smaller ears. Campbell hamsters can live between 2.5 and 3 years. They may need some time to get used to you and initially pose a risk of biting you. If introduced at an early age, they can share a cage with hamsters of the same species and gender.

Gonzales Hamster

Gonzales hamsters, which vary in size from approximately 5-7 cm, can weigh between 60-70 g. They are difficult to control due to their speed and dislike of being held. However, thanks to their extreme docility, they are unlikely to bite. Their lifespan can be between 2-2.5 years. It is possible to encounter Gonzales hamsters in many different fur colors. They can share their cages with friends of the same species and gender whom they meet at an early age.

Hamster Behaviors and Habits

Hamsters are nocturnal animals. In other words, they need to sleep during the day; nights are the time when their activity peaks. Therefore, it is very important to give them the opportunity to rest during the day. However, it's important to remember that while hamsters enjoy playing with you, they need solitude and can be shy. Therefore, it's recommended to place their cage in a comfortable location, away from noise and other factors that could negatively affect them, such as extreme cold or heat. It's also important that they have hiding places within their cage.

It should be remembered that hamsters have a habit of chewing. They may chew on objects within reach of their cage, as well as those they might see if they leave the cage, which could pose a danger to them. It's necessary to place their cage away from such objects and ensure its sturdiness. To satisfy their chewing needs and allow them to expend their energy while having fun, the hamster cage should also be filled with various toys.

Hamsters don't need help cleaning themselves; they can groom themselves. Since they relieve themselves on the wood shavings on the bottom of the cage, regular cage cleaning should not be neglected.
