Many people know that calico cats, also known as tricolored cats, are usually female, but they don't know that calico cats are not a breed, but are named differently because of their colors. Calico cats, with their wonderful fur, can captivate everyone who sees them.

Calico is not a cat breed like Persian or Siamese. Persian cats, Maine Coon, Manx, or other cat types can have calico-looking cats. For a cat to be called calico, its fur must be black, white, and orange. These three colors are found in patches on the cat's fur. Usually, the white color is more dominant in the fur. The term calico comes from the fact that the color of the cat's fur resembles calico cloth, which was brought from India to Europe. Calico cats are often confused with piebald cats, which frequently have blue and orange colors. Piebald cats have very little white fur, and in most cases, none at all. Calico cats can have light brown, cream, chocolate, or gray fur instead of bright white, orange, and black. Which Breeds Have Calico? The main characteristic of calico cats is their tricolor. Since calico is not a single breed, calico cats can be found in many breeds. However, not all breeds have calico coloration. If you want to own a tricolor cat, you need to look at certain breeds. The calico cat breeds are as follows:

Calico cat characteristics also raise some questions about their gender. Due to the unique chromosomal structure that determines the color differences seen in their fur, almost all calico cats are female.

X and Y chromosomes determine whether a cat will be male or female. Cats with XX chromosomes are female, and cats with XY chromosomes are male. The X chromosome also carries the gene that causes the black and orange colors in the fur of calico cats.

Female calico cats have two X chromosomes, therefore they carry two color genes. Both orange and black colors are seen when a cat has one X chromosome with the orange gene and another with the black gene.

This can be confusing at first. A cat receives an X chromosome carrying the black color gene from its mother and an X chromosome carrying the orange color gene from its father. While a single X gene with a color gene is sufficient to determine fur color, in these females, two X chromosomes with different color codes combine.

During development, one X chromosome becomes dominant over the other, causing the color gene it carries to be dominant. This dominant color development occurs independently in each cell, and the gene that is dominant in one cell may remain recessive in another. This is why calico cats have different orange and black colors.

The white color makes things a little different in calico cats. For white fur to be possible, the cat must also inherit a gene from either its mother or father that is unrelated to the X and Y chromosomes associated with the calico cat's white color code.

Because male cats only have one X chromosome for orange or only black, and no Y chromosome, calico cats technically cannot be male. Male cats can only be black or only orange, but not both.

There are a few exceptions to the rule that calico cats are only female. These exceptions are Klinefelter syndrome, a genetic abnormality, and chimerism. Klinefelter syndrome is a condition where a male cat receives an extra X chromosome from either its mother or father, resulting in an XXY chromosome. Chimerism, on the other hand, is the fusion of different embryos during early development, resulting in a single embryo carrying two different DNAs.

These two mutations are quite rare. Almost all male calico cats are sterile and therefore cannot be bred. Because male calico cats are born with genetic mutations, they experience more health problems than female cats. With careful care, male calico cats can have a long and healthy life. Therefore, male calico cats need to have caring families who can provide special care.
