Hypoglycemia is a common condition in diabetic cats. It is essential that a diabetic cat's daily feeding routine, insulin injections, and exercise are not skipped. Deviating from the cat's feeding and medication routine, or incorrect insulin administration, can lead to hypoglycemia in cats. A cat previously diagnosed with diabetes may go into diabetic remission and suddenly need injections. This can very easily lead to an overdose of insulin.
Very few cats experience hypoglycemia without diabetes. This is usually due to a problem in the liver or pancreas. Hypoglycemia can also occur in non-diabetic cats as a result of a blood infection. If a cat loses consciousness due to hypoglycemia, it is an emergency and requires immediate medical attention.
Sugar is naturally processed in the body by the hormone insulin, produced in the pancreas. Too much insulin in the body, such as from insulin injections in a diabetic cat or excessive hormone production due to a condition like insulinoma, can render blood sugar levels insufficient for normal bodily functions. Other organs can use fat or protein when blood sugar levels are low, but the brain needs sugar to function. A cat is considered hypoglycemic when its blood sugar level falls below 60 milligrams per deciliter. In this case, the brain rapidly begins to lose its function. Hypoglycemia can be fatal if blood sugar levels are not raised quickly. Symptoms of Hypoglycemia in Cats Low blood sugar in cats may not initially cause visible symptoms. However, if you have a diabetic cat, you need to make sure you know the early signs of hypoglycemia. Permanent brain damage can occur if blood sugar is not raised in time. The most common symptoms of hypoglycemia are:

Kedilerde Hipoglisemi Nedenleri
Hypoglycemia in cats is generally associated with diabetes. Disruption of the diabetic routine or insulin administration errors can lead to dangerously low blood sugar. Common causes of hypoglycemia in non-diabetic cats are liver and pancreas problems. The underlying cause of hypoglycemia may very rarely go undiagnosed. Among the most common causes of hypoglycemia are;
- High insulin dose,
- Multiple insulin administration,
- Not eating enough after insulin,
- Continuous vomiting,
- Improper blood sugar control in diabetic cats,
- Continuation of insulin administration despite diabetic remission,
- Excessive exercise,
- Addison's disease,
- Pancreatitis,
- Liver The disease,
- Insulinoma tumor in the pancreas that causes insulin secretion,
- Blood infection are included.
Diagnosis and Treatment Methods
If you give your cat more insulin than necessary, you should take the cat to a veterinary clinic or animal hospital immediately. All medications used, insulin doses administered, and the cat's daily routine must be reported to the veterinarian completely. If there is no disruption in the routine, a physical examination as well as the cat's medical history are among the requirements for diagnosis. To understand how severe the hypoglycemia in the cat is, the blood glucose level needs to be measured.
If your cat is not diabetic, the condition causing the hypoglycemia should be diagnosed. Before diagnosis, the cat's blood sugar level is stabilized, followed by a complete blood count. This checks for problems such as infection or cancer. A urinalysis is performed to determine if the kidneys are functioning properly. X-rays or other imaging methods are used to check for any abnormalities in the organs or to examine tumor formation.
For a hypoglycemic cat to have enough fuel to perform basic functions, its blood sugar needs to be significantly raised. If the cat is not diabetic, the underlying problem is treated comprehensively.
If your cat begins to show signs of hypoglycemia, it may be recommended to give your cat some form of glucose. This is vital for the cat. The glucose solution is applied to the cat's lips or under its tongue. A glucose solution can be prepared with corn syrup or honey. However, table sugar should not be used for this process.
If blood sugar is very low, a dextrose solution is administered intravenously at the veterinary clinic to regulate blood sugar levels. The cat needs to stay at the clinic for this procedure. After the intravenous treatment, the cat is given a small amount of food. During this time, the cat is monitored every 1-2 hours. Intravenous administration is continued until the cat's blood sugar level returns to normal.
