Pheromones are chemicals that all cats use to interact with each other and the world around them. These chemicals are secreted from special glands located in various parts of a cat's body. All cats produce different pheromones, and this difference also affects their behavior towards each other. Cats can understand each other through pheromones, regardless of age, breed, or gender. Cats have numerous glands around their faces, chins, under their ears, cheeks, and mouth area that secrete pheromones. They also have pheromone-producing glands in the pads on their paws and around the nipples of female cats. Cats perform various actions to secrete pheromones or detect pheromones from other cats. The most common of these are: Rubbing their heads against various objects, Scratching objects, Gently bumping their heads against other cats or humans, Rubbing their bodies against different objects and surfaces, Urinating to mark territory.

Pheromones contain approximately 40 different chemicals, and cats know exactly what each chemical means. There is a fundamentally complex relationship between cats and pheromones. Cats use an organ called the vomeronasal organ to understand pheromone messages in their environment. This organ is located on the upper palate of cats. To detect a pheromone around them, cats slowly open their mouths and turn their lips inward. This behavior is also called the flehmen response.

The pheromone enters through the mouth and reaches the vomeronasal organ in the palate. This organ is a small mass located just behind the cat's front upper teeth and is easily visible from the outside. Pheromones are safe chemicals for cats and do not enter the cat's bloodstream. Therefore, it is impossible for a cat to be exposed to too much pheromone.

What are Pheromones Used For?

Pheromones are very important for cats to understand the world around them. They not only facilitate communication with other cats but also influence their behavior. Cats can release pheromones for many different reasons. Situations in which pheromone release occurs include: There are various needs such as:

  • Territorial marking,
  • Learning about other cats,
  • Establishing familiarity,
  • Bond building,
  • Cinsel isteklilik belirtme,
  • Ensuring mother and kittens get used to each other,
  • Kendini rahatlatma,
  • Indicating feelings of security, happiness and contentment,
  • Indicating fear or stress.

The composition of pheromones can vary depending on the messages cats want to convey. For example, if your cat examines a new item in the house in detail and decides it is safe, it will leave its pheromones on it to mark it as such.

The Importance of the Face in Pheromones

The face of cats is practically a pheromone center. The glands that secrete pheromones are concentrated on and around the face. The forehead, chin, cheeks, around the mouth, and the back of the ears are the main areas where pheromones are secreted. Therefore, you often see cats rubbing their faces against things. They like to rub their faces against almost everywhere they can reach, from people they love in the house to table legs. This marking is an indication for them that the environment is safe. Cats then feel happy and relaxed when they smell these scents. In this way, they also understand that the environment they are in is their territory. This is precisely why cats look around suspiciously when they enter an unfamiliar environment or when a strange object enters the house. However, after a while, you can see that they start to move around more comfortably once they leave their own scent. When your cat starts rubbing its face against you, you can understand that there is an important reason behind it. It is a sign that it feels safe, happy, and peaceful in your presence.
