Problems in the spleen, like all organs that play important roles in the vital functions of dogs, bring about concerns. Enlarged spleen, which can lead to symptoms such as abdominal swelling, prominent lymph nodes, vomiting, weakness, and weight loss, is one of the health problems that should be taken into consideration in dogs. In this article, you can find information about enlarged spleen in dogs.

What is the Function of the Spleen in Dogs?

The spleen is a very important organ for the immune system of dogs. It acts as a filter in the body and is also the largest lymphoid organ. Its main functions include: The spleen's functions include: Removal of foreign invaders from the body through a process called phagocytosis, Removal of aging, dying, or abnormal blood cells from the bloodstream, Production of various immune cells, including lymphocytes and plasma cells, Red blood cell production, Red blood cell and platelet storage, Iron metabolism. Splenomegaly (enlarged spleen) can occur due to various reasons. Enlargement often leads to symptoms such as diarrhea, loss of appetite, and collapse. Splenomegaly is a common problem in large breed dogs. Splenomegaly can be caused by other health problems such as inflammatory bowel disease. If symptoms of splenomegaly are noticed in dogs, it is recommended to contact a veterinarian immediately. Causes of Splenomegaly There are four main general causes of splenomegaly. These can be briefly listed as infiltration, inflammation, reactive changes, and obstruction. Infiltration This condition, also called leakage, is the cause of splenomegaly that occurs as a result of cells or various other substances leaking into the spleen tissue. Foreign substances that leak into the spleen tissue cause the organ to grow more than normal. The most common cause of infiltrative splenomegaly is cancer. The development of benign tumors can also lead to splenomegaly. The infiltrative process can be diffuse or nodular. Common causes of diffuse infiltrative splenomegaly include: Lymphoma, Mastocytosis, Multiple myeloma, Leukemia, Amyloidosis, Histiocytosis. On the other hand, some benign causes of nodular infiltration include hematoma, granuloma, abscess, hemgiomas, and myelolipomas. Nodular infiltration cancers are more common. Among spleen tumors, the following are commonly observed:

  • The spleen is involved in the following processes:
  • removal of foreign invaders from the body through a process called phagocytosis, removal of aging, dying, or abnormal blood cells from the bloodstream, production of various immune cells including lymphocytes and plasma cells, production of red blood cells, storage of red blood cells and platelets, and iron metabolism.

  • Spleen enlargement is a common problem in large breed dogs.
  • Other underlying health problems, such as inflammatory bowel disease, may be the cause of spleen enlargement.

If symptoms of spleen enlargement are noticed in dogs, it is recommended to contact a veterinarian immediately.

Causes of Splenomegaly

There are four main general causes of splenomegaly. These causes can be briefly listed as infiltration, inflammation, reactive changes, and obstruction.

Infiltration

Also called infiltration, this condition is the cause of splenomegaly resulting from the leakage of cells or various other substances into the spleen tissue. Foreign substances that leak into the spleen tissue cause the organ to grow more than normal. The most common cause of infiltrative splenomegaly is cancer. The development of benign tumors can also lead to splenomegaly. The infiltrative process can be diffuse or nodular.

the most common are:

  • Hemanjiyosarkom,
  • Histiocytic sarcoma,
  • Leiomyosarcoma,
  • Fibrosarcoma,
  • Osteosarcoma,
  • Undifferentiated sarcomas are included.

Inflammation

Various infectious diseases, including bacteria, viruses, protozoa, and fungi, lead to an increase in the size of the spleen. These types of enlargements are inflammation-related growths.

Reactive Changes

The spleen can begin to enlarge when it accumulates immune cells such as lymphocytes and plasma cells. This accumulation occurs as a result of immune system stimulation associated with certain diseases, particularly immune-mediated hemolytic anemia.

Obstruction

Blood accumulates in the spleen when the spleen's vessels cannot drain normally, leading to swelling. Possible causes of impaired venous drainage in the spleen include heart failure, certain liver diseases, splenic torsion, or blockage of certain major vessels in the body.

What are the Symptoms of Spleen Enlargement in Dogs? The symptoms in dogs with an enlarged spleen are highly variable. In some cases, there are no clinical signs, while in others, the symptoms can be extremely severe and lead to illness. The symptoms primarily depend on the underlying disease causing the enlargement. Potential signs associated with splenomegaly include: Fatigue and weakness, Fainting, Pale gums, Loss of appetite, Vomiting and diarrhea, Abnormal heart rhythm, Rapid or labored breathing, Yellowing of the whites of the eyes. Dogs exhibiting these symptoms should be taken to a veterinarian for examination without delay.

Diagnosis and Treatment Methods

Splenomegaly (enlarged spleen) can be easily diagnosed with a physical examination. In some dog breeds, such as German Shepherds or Scottish Terriers, the spleen is larger than normal. When splenomegaly is suspected, a more detailed examination may be necessary to understand the condition causing the enlargement. Blood and urine tests, biopsy, and imaging methods are used to perform detailed examinations.

To treat splenomegaly, the underlying disease causing the enlargement must be treated. In cases of enlargement caused by infection, drug treatment, especially antibiotic treatment, is preferred to treat the infection. You can find detailed information on this topic in our content titled "Things to Consider When Using Antibiotics in Dogs". In cases of splenomegaly caused by a problem originating from the immune system, treatments that regulate the function of the immune system are applied. In dogs with splenic tumors, it is usually necessary to remove the spleen. This surgery is called splenectomy.
