Fastest Running Dogs

Dogs possess many admirable qualities. One of these is their remarkable running speed. Some dog breeds, in particular, are surprisingly, even unexpectedly, fast. Are you ready to meet the world's fastest dogs? Let's begin.

Greyhound

Greyhound, also known as the hound. Of course, when speed is mentioned, it's only natural that the hound comes to mind first. Hounds hold the title of being the fastest of dogs. Hound breeds, especially when properly raised, can reach speeds of up to 75 kilometers per hour. Thanks to this incredible speed, they can track and catch very fast prey such as hares, foxes, or deer.

Saluki

Salukis, ranking second among the fastest dog breeds, can reach speeds of up to 68 kilometers per hour. Although these breeds were trained to catch rabbits, they can be quite fun pets. Their favorite activities include running and swimming. Although they can run very fast, their daily activity needs are low. Another interesting feature is that Salukis, along with hounds, are among the oldest dog breeds. It is known that Salukis were mummified with pharaohs in Ancient Egypt.

Afghan Hound

Afghan hounds are another runner in the dog world. Although they have long legs, it is hard to imagine that they can be very fast when you look at their fur. However, Afghan hounds can reach speeds of 64 km per hour. Tall and striking in appearance, Afghan Hounds love to run and play. The Afghan Hound breed is one of the dog breeds with a very long history. Because of their highly independent personalities, they are one of the dog breeds that are difficult to train.

Vizsla

Vizsla dogs are as intelligent as they are fast. A medium-sized breed, the Vizsla shares the third place with Afghan Hounds in terms of speed. Vizsla dogs, like Afghan Hounds, can reach speeds of 64 kilometers per hour. These dogs, which are quite lean, are very muscular. Vizslas can point to a place, retrieve many objects requested of them, swim, and run for long periods. They are also known for being extremely gentle.

Whippet

You only need to look at a Whippet to understand how fast it is. With its slender body, short fur, and long legs, the Whippet breed is one of the dogs born to run fast. The Whippet breed is also a type of dog that accelerates quickly. These dogs are especially trained to hunt small rodents. Whippet dogs can run for a long time at an average speed of 54 kilometers per hour and can reach speeds of 64 kilometers per hour.

Jack Russell Terrier

The Jack Russell Terrier is probably one of the dog breeds that everyone knows. Jack Russells are among the most preferred dog breeds, especially by hunters. Trained to hunt foxes or rabbits, Jack Russells can reach speeds of 61 kilometers per hour. The lineage of Jack Russell Terriers does not go back as far as the breeds on the list.

Dalmatian

Famous for their appearance, Dalmatians can look like a blurry black and white dot passing before your eyes when they start running. This is because Dalmatians can reach speeds of up to 60 kilometers per hour. This breed, which has lived with humans since the 1600s, is also a reliable friend and protector. One of the prominent characteristics of Dalmatians is their high energy level. Therefore, it is necessary to consider this before owning a Dalmatian.

Borzoi

Another breed that you might expect to run fast from the outside is the Borzoi. Although they have long and curly fur, this does not prevent them from running fast. The long and slender legs of Borzois allow them to reach speeds of 54 kilometers per hour.

Doberman

Dobermans, renowned for being security and police dogs, are one of the most athletic dog breeds. They can quickly reach speeds of up to 51 kilometers per hour and can run at high speeds for extended periods. Another important characteristic of Dobermans is their ability to jump very high. The speed and jumping ability of Dobermans easily prove why they are used in law enforcement.

Border Collie

With their long fur and short legs, you wouldn't think a Border Collie could be on this list. These dogs, capable of reaching very high speeds, are also among the most intelligent dog breeds. Being very energetic, Border Collie dogs are a great option, especially for families with children.
