Cats need to be vaccinated on time and regularly. This is a critical issue to ensure our little friends are protected from disease and to increase their chances of living a healthy life. Today, thanks to increased research on the safety and effectiveness of vaccines, awareness of their importance has risen. Indeed, veterinarians recommend that, in addition to the mandatory vaccines for all cats, specific vaccines are also recommended based on the cat's lifestyle. In this article, we will provide information about one of the most important basic vaccines that concerns every cat owner: the combination vaccine. Veterinarians administer combination vaccines, one of the most important parts of the basic vaccination protocol for cats, to provide immunity against three very dangerous diseases. Let's get to know combination vaccines, which enable cats to develop an immune response against Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis, Feline Calicivirus, and Feline Panleukopenia.

What is a Combination Vaccine? Why is it Important for Cats?

Vaccines enable the immune system to recognize and fight specific viruses, bacteria, or microorganisms. After vaccination, the body's immune system develops immunity to the vaccinated microorganism. In other words, it recognizes it, learns how to react to the virus if an infection occurs, and develops a defense against it. In this way, serious health problems caused by the microorganism can be prevented.

The vaccine containing parvovirus, herpesvirus, and calicivirus agents to protect cats from Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis, Feline Calicivirus, and Feline Panleukopenia is called a combination vaccine. The combination vaccine is one of the fundamental steps in the feline vaccination schedule protocol and is essential for maintaining the health of both indoor and outdoor cats.

The first dose of the combination vaccine, which provides maximum protection against these three dangerous viral diseases that we will discuss in detail shortly and stands out as the safest method, should be given when the kitten is 6-8 weeks old. After that, it is important to administer booster doses every 3-4 weeks until the cat is 16-20 weeks old. The cat receives another booster dose when it is 16 weeks old and 1 year after the last vaccination. After this initial vaccination, the combination vaccine is repeated every 3 years. When the vaccination schedule for cats begins, your veterinarian will provide detailed information about the timing of all vaccines, including the combination vaccine.

Diseases Protected by the Combination Vaccine and its Effects on Cats

The combination vaccine provides protection against 3 separate viral diseases.

Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis/Herpesvirus 1 - (FVR/FHV-1): In cats, FHV initially affects the upper respiratory tract and eye structures. It is transmitted through direct contact with the nasal, eye, and oral secretions of infected cats. It can begin to spread to other cats within 24 hours of infection. The Feline Rhinotracheitis virus, also known as feline herpesvirus, can cause serious respiratory tract infections in cats. It can cause symptoms such as runny nose, nasal congestion, sneezing, and conjunctivitis. You can find detailed information on this topic in our article titled "Things to Know About Conjunctivitis in Cats". This virus can also lead to mouth ulcers and pneumonia in some cats. Even if a cat recovers from the initial infection caused by the herpesvirus, the virus remains dormant in the nerves. When a cat's immune system weakens and their body is under stress, it can begin to show its effects again. Feline Panleukopenia – FPV: Also known as feline parvovirus or canine distemper. It is highly contagious and, unfortunately, can be life-threatening. It particularly affects kittens and unvaccinated cats. The virus's main characteristic is that it attacks growing and dividing cells in the body, including those in the intestines, skin, and bone marrow. The virus's effects gradually increase, primarily reducing energy and appetite. It can then cause vomiting and diarrhea. This virus, which leads to the death of white blood cells, can trigger secondary infections in kittens. White blood cells are responsible for the body's fight against infections; when the virus attacks these cells, the body becomes vulnerable to various infections. Parvovirus can be found anywhere in the environment, and it is known to be quite potent and can survive for years. It also threatens cats that don't go outside because, for example, if shoes are brought inside the house, the virus can be carried in.

Feline Calicivirus – FVC: Calicivirus, a viral pathogen that causes upper respiratory tract infections in cats, can lead to flu-like symptoms in your cat; it can also cause serious infections affecting the lungs, joints, and organs. Sneezing, runny nose, sores on the nasal skin, eye discharge, conjunctivitis, fever, dehydration, mouth sores, increased saliva production, and decreased appetite are common symptoms of calicivirus. In some cases, these symptoms may be accompanied by pneumonia, leading to difficulty breathing and coughing; arthritis, causing swelling in affected joints; and inflammation of the blood vessel walls, which can trigger multiple organ failure. It can be transmitted directly through the secretions of an infected cat or indirectly through the use of contaminated items. Symptoms of the disease may appear 2-6 days after exposure to the virus. In severe cases, the lungs, joints, and kidneys can be invaded by the virus.

Benefits of Combination Vaccines for Cat Health

Combination vaccines in cats provide immunity against 3 infectious diseases; thus, cats can be protected against viral diseases that can threaten their lives. Today, thanks to increased vaccination practices, it is known that the incidence of many diseases affecting cats has decreased. Therefore, adherence to the vaccination schedule, which can be prepared specifically for cats by veterinarians, is considered a very valuable step in maintaining the health of our friends.
